Carnivore Diet Food Pyramid: What One Meat Month Measured

The carnivore diet food pyramid connection is protein: the new pyramid puts protein up front, and the carnivore trend rides that, but a Columbia dietitian warns that an all-meat plate drops fiber, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. One measured all-meat month shows what a general warning can't. Dr. Mike ate 20 plain Burger King patties a day for 30 days. His HRV was cut in half within a week, and by Day 29 his ARX scores were record lows for him. That is one man eating fast-food patties, so it proves nothing about every all-meat diet.

The new food pyramid doesn't hand carnivore a free pass

The new pyramid puts more weight on protein, and the carnivore diet food pyramid argument stops right there. A Columbia dietitian writes that the trend has gained traction partly because it fits the protein emphasis in the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines. The USDA fact sheet calls for high-quality protein, healthy fats and fruits too. It doesn’t stop at meat.

Here’s the real problem. People read one layer of the pyramid. They skip the next one. They skip the one after that. I already wrote up the fight between guideline protein and the saturated fat cap, so I won’t repeat it here. This post is about the other half of her warning: what goes missing when the plate holds only animal foods.

Her list is short. Fiber, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium. It’s a fair warning. It’s also a general one. It can’t tell you how your body copes. It can’t tell you how mine copes. Only a test can.

What goes on a carnivore plate

You eat animal products only: meat, poultry, eggs, fish and seafood, some dairy, and water. Harvard Health lists what the meal plan allows and what it cuts: all vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds and nuts.

In practice the plan is mostly beef, with pork, lamb, chicken, eggs, butter and cream used to varying degrees. Some people eat organ meats and bone broth. Many avoid dairy completely. Breakfast is usually eggs and meat, and some people skip it.

Our version was stricter than any of them. The film shows Dr. Mike eating one food, plain Burger King patties, with no bun and no condiments and only water to drink. That is not how most people do carnivore. One food. One question about meat. Nothing else in the way.

The nutrients an all-meat plate leaves out

The evidence says the risk is real, but the size of it is still unknown. The Columbia page names fiber, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and antioxidants as the gaps. A narrative review asking whether a carnivore diet can supply every essential nutrient calls the question open, because no trials existed when it was written.

  • Potassium: the NIH fact sheet lists fruits and vegetables among the main sources.
  • Magnesium: MedlinePlus sets 420 mg a day for men 31 and older.
  • Vitamin C: covered in my vitamin C post.
  • Fiber: close to none on a meat-only plate.

I’ll be straight with you. Nobody ever lab-tested the patties. I can’t tell you what was in them. I can tell you what we measured in the man who ate them.

What 30 days of meat measured in Dr. Mike

We didn’t guess. We measured. The book records that Dr. Mike’s HRV was cut in half within a week. By Day 19 it was a little over halfway back to baseline.

We tested his fitness at baseline, on Day 14 and on Day 29: ARX, CAROL bike sprints, sprints, jumps and a one-mile run. Dr. Mike wrote on Day 29 that his ARX numbers were record lows for him, and that his mile was his worst “since maybe middle school.” This is a fit doctor. A guy who trains. Those numbers weren’t supposed to happen.

The journal fills in the rest. On Day 12 he lost interest in eating and started setting alarms to remind himself to eat. On Day 13 he dropped to one knee during a dizzy spell. The film suggests this matches the warning, since he suspected electrolyte and micronutrient gaps himself. Treat that as our interpretation, not a diagnosis. What his Day 30 bloodwork showed is in the film.

One burger month is not proof about every carnivore diet

It’s one man eating one processed food. Plain fast-food patties are not grass-fed steak, liver, eggs or salmon. The film shows how we picked the burger. We ran a blind taste test of plain McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King patties against a grass-fed patty. In the film, the grass-fed patty scored 46 points and Burger King, the top fast-food patty, scored 34.

So the best-tasting meat on the table wasn’t the meat he ate. Other people report the opposite of Dr. Mike’s month. In a self-reported survey of 2,029 carnivore eaters, respondents described high satisfaction and few side effects, but it had no controls and nobody checked their labs. A small military pilot found keto induction tended to lower HRV. That points in his direction, but it’s still only a pilot.

Individual results vary. Dr. Mike later went back on grass-finished beef and declined again, though less. Less, not zero. That’s the point. The meat, the person and the month all count, and I unpack the differences in keto vs carnivore.

What a carnivore day looked like for Dr. Mike

For Dr. Mike it was two meals and a gallon-plus of water. The film shows him eating 12 patties at lunch and 8 at dinner on Day 1.

It didn’t stay easy. On Day 6 he ate all 20 in one sitting to test the meat sweats. He never got them. He crashed instead. Day one told us very little. Week one told us more. The month told us what his body could actually live with.

If you aren’t testing, you’re guessing. Before any all-meat month, get a baseline: bloodwork, a fitness test you can repeat, and some way to track recovery. Then test again partway through. Then test again at the end. Don’t guess. Test.

Frequently asked questions

Is a carnivore diet the same as keto?

No. Keto limits carbohydrates and can include vegetables, nuts and oils. Carnivore removes every plant food. An all-meat plate is usually very low in carbs, so the two overlap, but they aren’t the same diet. After the burger month, Dr. Mike did a keto-pescatarian reset month built around vegetation and some fish, and he recovered.

Who is Dr. Mike in The Keto Project?

Dr. Michael Brandon, DC, is a fit chiropractor and the test subject for my burger month. His labs, HRV, brain scans and fitness tests from the experiment are his own, all recorded on camera and in the book.

Who paid for the bloodwork in the 600-burger experiment?

I paid for it myself. The lab used for the testing refused to be part of the film. The panels covered hormones, cardiometabolic markers, liver, thyroid, kidneys and inflammation, tested before the burger month, after it, after a reset month and after a grass-finished beef month.

Should I try eating 20 burgers a day?

No. The book says Dr. Mike’s month was done under observation for a film and that readers shouldn’t try it themselves. It was built to measure one extreme case, not to serve as a meal plan. If you’re curious about all-meat eating, the useful lesson is to test before you start, partway through, and after.

The Bottom Line

The pyramid’s protein message doesn’t make carnivore safe, and Columbia’s warning doesn’t make it harmful for you in particular. It’s a list of nutrients to watch. Dr. Mike’s month shows what it looked like when one body ran out of room. His HRV fell, his performance fell, and he needed alarms to remind himself to eat. Meat, fish or vegetables, the work is the same. Measure first. Decide second. Stop guessing.
